Clinical Chemistry
We provide a comprehensive range of biochemistry, endocrinology, immunology, infectious disease and toxicology testing of biological fluids (mainly blood and urine). These tests asses organ function, detect infections or immune responses (including vaccine status), identify exposure to drugs of abuse and/or measure medication levels in the blood to ensure they remain within safe and therapeutic ranges.

Haematology and Transfusion Medicine
We assess conditions such as anaemia, bleeding tendencies and blood cancers. We monitor patients on blood-thinning medications like Warfarin to ensure treatment remains safe and effective. Our services also include blood typing and compatibility testing for transfusions, particularly in pre- and post-operative care, supporting safe surgical procedures within Saint James Hospital.

Histopathology
We examine tissue samples taken during surgery at St. James Hospital and affiliated clinics. Each sample undergoes a rigorous step-by-step preparation process followed by microscopic examination by our specialized pathologists to determine a diagnosis. We are committed to delivering quick results so that treatment decisions can be made with minimal delay.

Cytology
We perform microscopic examination of cells from samples that can be collected quickly and in a non-invasive way that often does not require surgery. Cervical smear samples taken by your gynaecologist are examined for infection, inflammation, pre-cancerous changes or cancer. Our scientists also examine non-gynaecological samples to test cells collected from lumps, joint (synovial) fluid and other body fluids.

Microbiology
We test blood, urine, swabs and other body fluids to find out if harmful bacteria are present. We also check which antibiotics will be most effective. This helps your doctor with treatment options and avoids unnecessary medications.

Molecular diagnostics
We use molecular testing to detect the genetic material (DNA or RNA) of bacteria, viruses, and parasites directly from clinical samples. Unlike traditional culture methods, which require organisms to grow in the laboratory and may take several days or fail to detect certain infections, molecular techniques provide faster and more sensitive results, with a lower risk of missing an infection. Most tests in this department are used to identify sexually transmitted infections, food-borne pathogens (known as gastro screen), and respiratory infections, supporting rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment decisions.
